Accountant

About the Company

Almco Plumbing is a growing California plumbing company specializing in trenchless sewer system repair. We’re looking for an experienced Accountant to take ownership of the company’s core financial processes, including payroll calculation and processing, financial reporting, and tax compliance.

Responsibilities

1. Payroll approval — top priority area:
   • Approving payroll prior to disbursement;
   • Working in ADP (or a comparable U.S. payroll platform);
   • Preparing and filing federal and California payroll taxes.
2. Period-end close (month-end / year-end):
   • Preparing adjusting journal entries (accruals, prepaids, depreciation, etc.);
   • Reviewing and finalizing bank and credit card reconciliations;
   • Preparing financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow);
   • Maintaining and overseeing the general ledger and chart of accounts;
   • Reviewing and correcting data entered by the bookkeeper.
3. Job costing and construction/trades-specific accounting:
   • Allocating costs (labor, materials, subcontractors, permits, equipment) to jobs;
   • Reporting margin and profitability by job;
   • Maintaining WIP and over-/under-billing schedules;
   • Tracking retainage/retention;
   • Maintaining inventory valuation;
   • Tracking equipment and fleet costs.
4. Tax and regulatory compliance:
   • Preparing and filing California sales & use tax;
   • Preparing 1099-NEC forms for subcontractors; collecting W-9s, COIs, and lien waivers;
   • Coordinating with the CPA on federal and California income tax;
   • Supporting workers' comp and general liability insurance audits;
   • Monitoring compliance with California licensing requirements.
5. Financial planning and analysis:
   • Preparing budgets and forecasts;
   • Cash flow forecasting;
   • Budget-vs-actual analysis;
   • Preparing management reports and KPIs.
6. Oversight and coordination:
   • Monitoring internal controls and segregation of duties;
   • Reviewing and approving payments and payroll within established authority;
   • Managing relationships with banks, lenders, and bonding/surety providers;
   • Supervising and providing guidance to the bookkeeper.

Requirements

• Hands-on experience with ADP (or a comparable U.S. payroll system) — priority requirement;
• Experience with U.S. payroll approval processes (federal + California specifics);
• 2−3+ years of experience as an Accountant at a U.S. company;
• Understanding of U.S. accounting standards (GAAP — preferred);
• Experience with QuickBooks or similar software;
• Knowledge of California sales & use tax, payroll tax, and 1099 compliance;
• Job costing experience (preferably in construction/trades/service industry);
• English proficiency at Upper-Intermediate (B2) level or higher — able to handle business correspondence, financial reporting, and calls with U.S. management/CPA without a language barrier;
• Attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to manage large volumes of data while meeting closing deadlines.

Nice to have:

• Experience working with trades/construction companies (plumbing, HVAC, construction);
• Familiarity with ServiceTitan;
• Experience with certified payroll / California prevailing wage reporting.
